How to Buy and Sell Auto Parts, Accessories and Tuning Products in Syria

Finding the correct auto part can be difficult, especially when offers are scattered across social media groups, repair shops, private messages and personal contacts.

Two parts may look identical but differ by model year, engine type, transmission, trim level, body version or manufacturer code. Buying the wrong component can lead to additional expenses, installation problems or safety risks.

Sham Market helps buyers search for auto parts, accessories and tuning products, compare listings and contact sellers directly in one organised marketplace.

1. Identify the vehicle accurately

Before searching, prepare complete information about the vehicle:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Production year
  • Body type
  • Engine size
  • Fuel type
  • Engine code
  • Transmission type
  • Trim level
  • Country or market version
  • VIN or chassis number
  • Original part number, if available

The model name and production year alone may not be enough. A manufacturer can use different parts on the same model depending on the engine, factory or production month.

Do not publish the full VIN publicly if it creates a privacy concern. Send the necessary information directly to a trusted seller when checking compatibility.

2. Search by part number whenever possible

The safest way to find many components is by their original equipment or manufacturer number.

The number may be found:

  • On the old part
  • On the original packaging
  • In the vehicle catalogue
  • On an authorised service document
  • In a previous repair invoice
  • Through a professional mechanic or parts specialist

Compare the number character by character. A single different letter or digit may indicate another version.

If the seller says that a different-numbered part is compatible, ask for catalogue confirmation or a clear explanation of the replacement code.

3. Understand the type of part you are buying

Auto parts are commonly sold as:

  • Original equipment parts
  • Original manufacturer parts
  • Aftermarket alternatives
  • Used original parts
  • Reconditioned or rebuilt parts
  • Repaired parts
  • Reproduction body parts

Each type has advantages and disadvantages.

An original used body component may fit better than a cheap new reproduction. However, a used mechanical part may have an unknown service life.

A quality aftermarket product can be practical, but an unknown low-quality alternative may wear quickly or cause damage to other systems.

The advertisement should clearly state which type of product is being offered.

4. Be especially careful with safety-critical parts

Some components directly affect the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users.

These include:

  • Brake discs and pads
  • Steering components
  • Suspension parts
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seat belts
  • Airbags
  • Airbag control units and sensors
  • Fuel-system components
  • Headlights and signal lights
  • Windshield and visibility-related parts

Do not buy these products based only on a low price.

Used airbags, repaired seat belts, damaged wheels or counterfeit brake components can create serious risks. Ask a qualified specialist to inspect important safety parts before installation.

5. Inspect used mechanical parts

When buying a used engine, transmission, turbocharger, alternator, starter motor, compressor or similar component, request detailed information.

Ask:

  • What vehicle was the part removed from?
  • What was the vehicle’s mileage?
  • Why was the vehicle dismantled?
  • Was the part tested?
  • Was it repaired or opened?
  • Is there a diagnostic or test report?
  • Is installation guaranteed?
  • Is there a return period?
  • Are seals and serial numbers visible?
  • Are accessories and sensors included?

Inspect for:

  • Oil or coolant leakage
  • Cracks
  • Broken mounting points
  • Damaged connectors
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Welding marks
  • Missing bolts or covers
  • Burnt smell
  • Excessive dirt inside openings
  • Removed or altered identification numbers

For expensive components, inspection by a mechanic is usually worth the cost.

6. Check body and lighting components

For bumpers, doors, fenders, bonnets, grilles, mirrors and lighting products, verify:

  • Exact model and production year
  • Standard or facelift version
  • Left or right side
  • Front or rear position
  • Colour code
  • Mounting points
  • Sensor and camera openings
  • Headlight technology
  • Connector type
  • Existing cracks or repairs
  • Whether brackets are included

A bumper may look suitable but still differ because of parking sensors, radar, cameras, fog lights or trim level.

For headlights, determine whether the vehicle uses halogen, xenon, LED or another system. Also check whether the control unit, bulb and brackets are included.

7. Check accessories before buying

Automotive accessories may include:

  • Floor mats
  • Seat covers
  • Key covers
  • Trunk organisers
  • Phone holders
  • Multimedia systems
  • Cameras
  • Parking sensors
  • Roof racks
  • Window deflectors
  • Car-care products
  • Interior lighting
  • Protective covers
  • Decorative trims

Ask whether the accessory is universal or designed specifically for the vehicle.

For model-specific products, confirm:

  • Vehicle model and year
  • Body type
  • Right-hand or left-hand drive, if relevant
  • Measurements
  • Installation method
  • Required drilling or modification
  • Electrical compatibility
  • Warranty
  • Items included in the package

A universal accessory may be cheaper, but it may not fit securely or may interfere with controls, airbags or visibility.

8. Choose tuning products responsibly

Tuning products can improve appearance, comfort or performance, but unsuitable modifications may create technical and safety problems.

Before purchasing, consider:

  • Compatibility with the vehicle
  • Quality of the material
  • Professional installation requirements
  • Effect on cooling or airflow
  • Effect on suspension and steering
  • Electrical load
  • Visibility and lighting
  • Ground clearance
  • Local inspection and registration requirements
  • Availability of replacement parts

Avoid products that imitate safety systems without providing their function.

Performance modifications involving the engine, turbocharger, fuel system, brakes or suspension should be selected and installed by experienced professionals.

9. Request real photos and videos

Do not rely only on catalogue pictures.

Ask the seller for:

  • Photos from different angles
  • Close-ups of the part number
  • Mounting points
  • Connectors
  • Defects and repairs
  • Packaging and labels
  • Serial number
  • A video showing operation, when relevant
  • A photo with the current date or another agreed reference

Catalogue images can explain the product type, but they do not prove the actual condition of the item being sold.

10. Compare the total cost

The lowest advertised price is not always the cheapest option.

Calculate:

  • Product price
  • Delivery
  • Customs or cross-border costs, if applicable
  • Installation
  • Programming or coding
  • Required fluids and consumables
  • Additional brackets and connectors
  • Repair expenses
  • Return shipping
  • Possible loss if the part is incompatible

An electronic component may require programming. An engine may need new fluids, filters, seals and installation parts. A bumper may require painting and additional brackets.

Compare the final installed cost, not only the listing price.

11. Agree on return and warranty conditions

Before payment, clarify:

  • Whether returns are accepted
  • How many days are provided for testing
  • Who pays for return delivery
  • Whether the warranty covers the part or installation
  • What happens if the product is incompatible
  • Whether electrical components can be returned
  • Whether opening, fitting or programming cancels the warranty
  • What proof is required for a claim

Keep the listing, messages, payment record, delivery document and photos of the package.

When receiving a shipment, record the unopened package and the unboxing process, especially for expensive or fragile items.

12. Complete the transaction safely

Be cautious if a seller:

  • Refuses to show the part number
  • Uses only copied catalogue photos
  • Avoids compatibility questions
  • Offers an unrealistically low price
  • Pressures you to transfer money immediately
  • Requests payment to an unrelated person
  • Refuses inspection or testing
  • Removes serial numbers
  • Gives contradictory information
  • Promises compatibility with every model

Whenever possible, inspect the product before payment. For expensive parts, meet at a repair shop or take a knowledgeable specialist with you.

Sham Market provides a platform for publishing advertisements and communication. Users must independently verify the seller, product, compatibility, condition, price and payment arrangements.

13. How to create an effective auto-parts listing

A clear advertisement attracts serious buyers and reduces unnecessary questions.

Include:

  • Part name
  • Manufacturer or brand
  • Part number
  • Vehicle manufacturer and model
  • Compatible years
  • Engine and transmission information
  • Left or right side
  • New, used, repaired or reconditioned status
  • Known defects
  • Items included
  • Real photos
  • Location
  • Price
  • Delivery options
  • Return or testing conditions
  • Preferred contact method

Instead of writing:

“Toyota headlight for sale.”

Write:

“Used original right front LED headlight for Toyota Corolla 2020–2022. Part number visible in the photos. All mounting points are intact, no cracks, control unit not included. Located in Damascus. Delivery to other cities can be discussed.”

Never hide repairs, broken mounting points or missing accessories. Honest information improves trust and protects both sides from disputes.
